The Arab Uprisings: Between Continuity and Change
Panel Discussion and Book Event
5pm on Wednesday ,17 April 2013
Cal State University Long Beach, MMC 200
Co-Editor Ziad Abu-Rish and contributor Aslı Bali, of The Dawn of the Arab Uprisings: End of An Old Order?, will discuss the Arab uprisings, focusing in particular on the comparative nature of the trajectories of the different uprisings, as well as the changing nature and effect of international and US policies towards them.
The Dawn of the Arab Uprisings (Pluto Press, 2012) sheds light on the historical context and initial impact of the mass uprisings that have shaken the Arab world since December 2010. It provides critical analysis and at times first-hand accounts of events that have received little or superficial coverage in Western and Arab media alike... It is important to take note of the diversity of reactions that emanated from activists, scholars, and others as the uprisings were first unfolding. In this sense, the volume archives the realm of possibilities, both imaginative and practical, optimistic and pessimistic, that were opened up as people sought to make sense of the rapidly unfolding events.
The book will be available for purchase.
This event is organized and sponsored by the Middle Eastern Studies Program at California State University Long Beach. It is co-sponsored by the History Department, International Studies Program, and Political Science Department.
